Making eye contact

Kate didn't like to make eye contact with people when she spoke to them. We tried to come up with ways to force her to make eye contact without stressing her out.

Fast food ordering
Restaurant ordering
Ordering a ticket for the movies

Tips:

Practice before you head out! Role play and model how to order things while looking directly at the person. Write it down on paper so they have a fallback option. Don't try this during peak hours. Off hours allow staff to give your child a little more time.

Grab & Go

Clear jars and labels are a better visual than regular packaging. Also, easier to open than most other packaging.

Media Limits

Keep track of your child's screen time. Know what they spend their time watching and put restrictions in place. Put time limits on the amount of time they spend on apps and set a time when access ends for the night

Simple Solution

Twist ties are too hard to use; try chip clips instead.

Making Plans

Involve your child in travel and event plans. Let them know what to expect and what their role in the plans will be. Not all surprises are feel fun.

Trip Prep

Museums and other venues are a great activity, but can be overwhelming. Do your homework before visiting and have a plan. Food , drinks, restrooms, what to avoid and handicap accessibilty. We always ask for a wheelchair when it becomes to much to handle. No need to miss out on any experience.

Choose Wisely

Keep a list in the kitchen for your child to add their favorite (healthy) foods. As they get older it's a nice way to afford them a little self-determination.

Meal Plans

Have them pick out a few healthy side dishes for each meal. They'll be more 'invested' in eating well.

Grab & Go

Make ahead egg muffins are a great option for get-it-yourself breakfast (being independent). Spray your muffin tin with cooking spray, add eggs, cheese, veggies or anything else.
